Your Belief System is ShotA lot of us will say that we lack self-confidence. But what do we mean? We can recognise confidence in someone else, but what are the essential ingredients to our own self-confidence?

My view is that self-confidence is a belief that the things that you want to do are within your capability. Rather than self-confidence being a feeling, it's about believing you can take effective action.

Once you look at it this way, it becomes easier to identify where confidence comes from and what you can do to get some more. Self-esteem is a bit more about self-acceptance, seeing ourselves as work in progress, good in some parts, in need of a bit of working in other parts. Read more here.

Professor Raj Persaud, psychologist, defines self-confidence as the attitude that allows you to promise yourself, no matter how difficult the problem life throws at you, that you will try as hard as you can to help yourself. You acknowledge that sometimes your efforts to help yourself may not result in success. And even where you are successful, it may not be noticed or valued by other people. And this is okay. You are not giving a performance.
