Stress

Stress is the way that you feel when pressure is placed on you.

A little bit can fire you up, give you motivation, and help you to perform better at something. However, too much pressure or pressure over a long time can result in stress. And stress can make you mentally and physically ill.

When faced with a situation that makes you stressed, your body releases stress hormones. These trigger the 'fight or flight' feelings and they are used up as you run away or rattle your sabre. But if the chemicals are not used up they accumulate in your body, and your heart rate speeds up, your blood pressure rises, and you sweat. Over the long term, your immune system is impaired.

Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy works well with all forms of stress, from low-level to post-traumatic stress disorder. And it works quickly, so you are back on track in just a few sessions.

Tips
Try the self-help leaflet in the DIY section.

Learn diaphragmatic breathing. This relaxes you very quickly.

Place your right hand on your chest and your left hand on your belly button. Take in a few short breaths and check how your hands are moving. Your left hand on your belly button should be rising up and down. Now, breathe in deeply so that your belly hand moves up. Keep practising till you have the knack. Your chest hand should remain still. Keep breathing like this, then take a big breath in, and hold it at the top for a second or two, and slowly slowly release the breath.

You should now feel quiet and relaxed.
